This is a timely article particularly in an era of probable increased burnout where a standard of perfection no doubt plays a significant part. It links nicely with an appraisals seminar which I recently attended. Our first address concerned the 'Imposter phenomenon' which I must admit I had never come across with that name before. For those not aware of it, this is where a person feels somewhat inauthentic (i.e. an imposter) in their role .. often to varying degrees dependent on mindset, external pressure etc. It is apparently pretty widespread and is substantially linked to whether or not one feels one is performing 'good enough' to be 'genuine.' This begs the question as to whose standards one is aspiring to and it struck me that the plethora of standards demanded, implied or perceived can leave the individual uncertain as to which ones to attempt to comply with and which can be relegated or ignored in the name of expediency.. in other words which ones define 'good enough.' I would imagine that most of us would set a high standard of 'respect for patients' above that for, say, impeccably constructed referral letters and in a time and resource limited system would, if necessary, ditch or reduce the latter to devote more resources to the former. However other comparisons are less clear I suppose much of it comes down to core values in the end .. are we always certain what they are and how malleable are they?
