Judy Foster’s article in the September 2017 issue of the Journal argues the case for closer working between GPs and social workers and illustrates how patients can benefit from such joint working.
For almost 50 years the benefits of such collaboration have been documented and it therefore seems disappointing that the case must be made yet again: Tilda Goldberg and June Neill’s 1972 seminal report, Social Work in General Practice, documented the value of an attached social worker to a North London practice and attested to the value of joint training for health and social work staff. Since then, other similar projects have provided similar evidence.
Sometimes history can show that there is no need to re-invent the wheel – just roll with it!
