- Page navigation anchor for RE: NHS choices vitamin D adviceRE: NHS choices vitamin D adviceThe Lee Way Phin article is good in showing community vitamin D levels. What we don't know is what is ''normal''. More worrying is the widespread lack of awareness of the long standing public health advice for children between 6 months and 5 years to take supplements (see NHS Choices1). If we add this though to this week's BMJ articles questioning the long standing practice of taking calcium and vitamin D supplements for bone health we have more uncertainty.2-3 Lots of articles connecting low vitamin D with all sorts of illness; as far as I am aware except for rickets no evidence of vitamin D supplements being of major benefit for anything else. Another evidence black hole but not sure if it is lack of evidence or evidence of lack of benefit.References1. http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-for-children.aspx2.
