- Page navigation anchor for Outcomes and inequalities in diabetesOutcomes and inequalities in diabetesFleetcroft et al.1 describe the trends in glycaemic control, hospitalisation for diabetes, and amenable mortality from diabetes over a six year period. They describe a large inequality gaps between those in the lowest and highest socioeconomic groups for all of these outcome measures. Most worrying is the widening gap across these groups for hospital admissions. This excellent analysis does not go on to explore the reasons for the observed differences. At the University of Surrey we are currently undertaking a series of investigations into potential disparities in healthcare provision in primary care which may be responsible for exacerbating these observed disparities.2 We are using data from over 130 volunteer primary care practices which are members of the RCGP research and surveillance network (www.rcgp.org.uk/clinical-and-research/our-programmes/research-and-surveillance-centre.aspx). Identification of any health provision disparities will help to identify target areas for the improvement in diabetes management in primary care, and hopefully help to close the widening gap in diabetes outcomes.References1.
