- Page navigation anchor for Inspiration: An added incentiveInspiration: An added incentiveAs a medical student looking for a career in general practice, the important points raised by Dr Wynter Bee and Dr Thing about the benefit of doing ultrasound guided injections (USGIs) in primary care1 made me reflect on an incident where I had witnessed such practice with landmark guided injections (LMGI) on GP placement and how the inspiration it provided for my career choices might offer additional incentives for GPs to take up USGI training.While on placement I shadowed one of the partnered GPs performing LMGI for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Conditions like osteoarthritis, in which soft tissue injections can provide pain relief,2–5 are very common in the UK. I vividly remember one patient, an elderly lady with limited shoulder mobility due to pain from osteoarthritis. This patient entirely fitted the authors description of patients who benefit from community soft tissue injections as she had an established diagnosis and had received relief with such injections previously. When the GP in question told her soft tissue injections would treat her pain her face fell, as she assumed she would need to go to the hospital, which was difficult for her due to transport issues and distance. When the GP explained he was able to give her the soft tissue injection himself that same day her relief was indescribable.
