We welcome the authors’ acknowledgment that principles of connecting, communication, collaboration and culture contained within Realistic Medicine are relevant across the entire health and social care landscape in Scotland, not only for the medical community. The proposed ‘mid-ground research’ aligns well with Realistic Medicine policy and Scotland’s Self Management Strategy, Gaun Yersel. We welcome the call for a co-created design process, but one that is person centred and includes the voice of lived experience from the outset is needed.
Whilst welcoming elements of the consensus statement generated by the SSPC, we would widen the partner composition of ‘policy makers and academics’ to include the third sector and people who use primary care services. We believe that the aim should be widened: moving from a need to ‘achieve greater health for citizens’ to achieving greater health with citizens.
