We agree that point of care testing has the potential to improve care pathways. Non the less it’s important to consider the key drivers that will impact on the adoption of point of care testing.
In health systems like the NHS where there are no financial incentives to see more patients, it’s unlikely that GP practices will wish to invest time and money in these technologies which will increase foot fall.
We believe near patient diagnostics such as SightDX1 that can differentiate between viral and bacterial infection should be easily accessible to patients. Empowering patients to make good self-care decisions should be the goal of these technologies. Community pharmacist are a highly skilled resource. Placing point of care testing in these setting would enable patients to differentiate between conditions appropriate for self-care and those needing medical intervention. This represents a opportunity to manage demand in free to access health care systems.
