Thank you for your enquiry about the BJGP‘s approach to sustainability and the environment. You can find our current policy on the BJGP website. We regularly review our “green credentials” and are actively discussing options for reducing the environmental burden of print publication, although this is a complex matter involving VAT law.

Thank you for publishing as Editor’s Choice the Climate Change Emergency letter by Avril Danczak in your September edition. There are actions the BJGP could take to decrease emissions, beginning with the use of a compostable wrapper instead of the current plastic one! Plastic is wasteful of oil, increases emissions and contributes to our current climate emergency…the biggest threat to public health of our times.
Other organisations are using compostable wrappers, for example, the Royal Horticultural Society. Please change the BJGP journal wrapper to something that can safely decompose. Paper wrappers worked well for years.

Secondly, can we give our members the option of receiving only the electronic version? This would certainly save on plastic consumption and reduce emissions created by paper processing, printing and transport.
Just as the RCGP leads the way with its Green Impact scheme, the BJGP could lead the way and proudly lead on this issue amongst the medical press.
