- Page navigation anchor for Delivering long-term cancer care in primary careDelivering long-term cancer care in primary careWe read with great interest the editorial by Gopal et al.1 regarding the needs of the growing population of cancer survivors in the UK, the challenges in providing them with quality care, and the role of the general practitioner (GP). It is comforting, reassuring and yet frustrating that the issues described by the authors are almost identical in nature to those in our countries and globally.2-4There has been ongoing debate about “who” or “where” cancer survivorship care should occur and which models are care are most effective in delivering quality of care.5, 6 We argue that there is not a one model for cancer survivorship care and that rather we should focus on “what” constitute quality, within the specific contexts of health services and resources. Cancer survivorship care is multidimensional and must address essential components pertaining to cancer and its treatment as well as to general health.7 Attention to these needs may be provided in any health care setting by properly trained professionals; the key is that these needs must be systematically assessed and appropriately addressed for every cancer survivor.
