In articles that otherwise champion the use of video consultations, Greenhalgh et al and Trethewey et al caution the universal appropriateness of video and the paucity of evidence supporting risk-benefit, highlighting a role in supplementing rather than replacing existing practices.1-2 A recent letter by Matheson also argues that psychosocial context needs to be elevated in the use of video consultation to avoid facilitating harmful ‘digital poverty’.3Much of the debate compares the safety, quality and accessibility of video consultations to face-to-face appointments in the context of remote physical assessment. However, it is also crucial to explore the role of video beyond the facilitation of remote examination, particularly as real-time visual cues are likely to provide a psychosocial advantage over other forms of remote consultation such as telephone and e-consultation.We recently conducted a quality improvement project at a large general practice in North Oxfordshire, exploring patient perceptions of video consultations.
