A recent letter to the editor in The Guardian shames GPs for “doing just about everything to dissuade patients from contacting them”. Now it is clear that these changes are likely to become permanent. It is our opinion that both as a College and as individual practices we need to take a proactive approach and transform these “temporary arrangements” into stable practices while both bringing our patients on board with the changes and helping the vulnerable. This first issue is about remote consultations and telephone triage with only a minority of patients receiving face-to-face appointments. It is a current expectation from our patients that it is a temporary measure, but we now know that it is likely to stay long-term even post-COVID.The second issue is engaging people with high risk of COVID-19. They are currently self-isolating and therefore not having routine health appointments or blood tests. It is noted that they are also less likely to contact GP for any other reason which results in increased morbidity and mortality from non-COVID causes. We need to re-approach and engage with these patients....Show MoreCompeting Interests: None declared.
