In the article by Mathews et al., the research clarified that through the COVID-19 pandemic, family medicine had considerable challenges in being involved in the pandemic response plans.1 The research suggested ways of overcoming the challenges of reforming the primary care system and integrating family medicine into comprehensive approaches to the pandemic by clarifying four themes. Family physicians need to be involved in comprehensive management of pandemic care to enable primary care to function fully.
Primary care continuity should be emphasized for effective management of community care in emergent situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic based on the foundation of family medicine. This article shows the importance of preserving primary care workforce capacity, improving communication with family physicians, and prioritizing community-based primary care to strengthen the integration of primary care in the pandemic.1 As McWhinney shows, the basis of primary care is continuity of care among physicians and patients.2 Continuity of family medicine can drive patients adherence to medications and physicians’ suggestion effectively, which can implement emergent management in communities. Thus, as this article shows, leveraging the longitudinal relationship between patients and family physicians should be prioritized in interventions in community care, including emergent situations.
