Why did NICE move obesity management from general practice? Over the last decade or so management of obesity has been hampered by these complex tiers of care and at the same time many people are bypassing supervised care by having weight loss surgery in Turkey and buying the injectable weight loss drugs online. These are usually without any support or follow up and the regulatory authorities (the GMC and Pharmaceutical regulators) have done nothing to improve safe care.
Yes obesity management will take time including being up to date but the time spent in managing all the co-morbidities is surely greater not to mention the lives blighted by this under cared for epidemic. No mention also re government policies on food surely an important part of the problem? The politics of what is a core part (already paid for) of primary care will also now muddy the waters and hinder a better life for millions
