This article concludes “hours per week is a more consistent way to define full-time work for GPs.”¹ It would be helpful if the RCGP adopted this as a formal recommendation.

An informal audit of shifts being advertised on a locum website over the last few months suggests that the BMA definition of a session as, “4 hours 10 minutes GP session” seems to be very different from the reality on the ground for many locum GPs.

Would it be possible for the RCGP to ask the government negotiators, BMA negotiators, and the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration Board (DDRB) to transition to the metric that applies to all other health professionals?

The time has come to define an hour of work as an hour of work and agree on a pay rate for that hour.
