Multiple-choice papers and videotaped consultations are two parts of a multi-format approach to assessment which also includes a trainer's report and an audit report. The number of doctors identified as unsatisfactory at the recertification stage could be reduced by these methods, and the system could also provide a template for the introduction of recertification procedures.
