TY - JOUR T1 - ‘They won't do any harm and might do some good’: time to think again on the use of antidepressants? JF - British Journal of General Practice JO - Br J Gen Pract SP - 47 LP - 49 DO - 10.3399/bjgp11X548983 VL - 61 IS - 582 AU - Hugh Middleton AU - Joanna Moncrieff Y1 - 2011/01/01 UR - http://bjgp.org/content/61/582/47.abstract N2 - Despite NICE guidance that should have limited it, antidepressant prescribing continues to increase. Research evidence suggests that much if not all of the observed efficacy should be attributed to complex non-specific effects rather than ‘restoration of disturbed brain chemistry’. According to this view the uncertain benefits of antidepressants are unlikely to outweigh the risks, suggesting the need to explore other approaches to treatment. ER -
