The contribution of primary health care to the everyday lives of children is enormously important. Although effective prevention, through vaccination and public health measures, and health promotion, through the provision of adequate nutrition and education, have achieved much, there is continuing controversy about the adequacy of the general practice care of children and young people in the UK. Previous articles in this Journal have highlighted some of the problems.
