AB  - There is enough evidence from epidemiological studies of respiratory disease in children and young adults to justify testing various strategies for the identification of those children who are particularly vulnerable to respiratory disease. Such studies should be coupled with anti-smoking programmes carried out by those involved in the health education of schoolchildren and adults. The effects of this selective approach to the prevention or control of respiratory disease would require rigorous evaluation.
