AB  - A new framework is proposed for analysing the consultation in primary care, and for integrating other models relevant to the consultation. Use of communication skills helps to reconcile the respective agendas of doctor and patient into a negotiated plan, which includes both management of problems and health promotion. Achieving the potential of consultations depends on cooperation between patient and doctor, and on sufficient time for appointments.
