Unwanted pregnancy in general practice

J R Coll Gen Pract. 1979 Feb;29(199):108-13.

Abstract

PIP: The Ballint seminar series at University College Hospital, London, England, was organized as teaching/research seminars to examine the nonverbal communication which occurs in the doctor/patient relationship. Study was made of 130 cases of women requesting termination of pregnancy. Evidence of specific character traits was found in these women requesting pregnancy termination and their relationship with their doctor was analyzed. 2 case studies--of 2 different types of women--are presented. In general, women requesting pregnancy termination have unsatisfactory personal relationships, especially with their mothers. Lack of emotional response to the situation seems to characterize the situation. These patients seemed to be manipulative in their relationships with their doctors. It was hypothesized that these women had 2 facets to their personalities--1 which wanted a baby and a more practical and worldly 1 which realized the impossibility of having a baby.
